What is Play Therapy?

The great developmental psychologist,
Erik Erikson, said that “play is a child’s work.” While teenagers and adults usually play as a way to relax or distract themselves, kids use play to learn and figure out the world they live in. Children aren’t able to understand or talk about their feelings like adults can. This can create a difficult situation for a child and his or her family, especially when feelings are stressful or intense and may be contributing to ongoing problematic behavior. In play therapy, we offer a variety of toys and materials for children to use in accessing and processing emotions related to situations or events they are struggling to cope with. We carefully attend to each child to create a sense of security and help him or her gain a sense of understanding.
